Participants attending an ALSO Course learn practical, standardized, team-based approaches to managing emergency situations, such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, cord prolapse and maternal resuscitation.
Although labor and delivery room emergency care is the main focus of the program, the ALSO curriculum further addresses preventive care and practice concerns, such as medical complications of pregnancy, preterm labor, labor dystocia, trauma and helping parents cope with a birth crisis.
Once registered, learners will receive an email invitation to log in to the AAFP-hosted learning dashboard. There, learners will navigate 8 hours of required online educational modules of 16 required chapters that include recorded lectures, slide sets and digital downloads. All 8 hours of education must be completed at the learner’s chosen pace prior to the live training event. Deadline for online module completion is April 16, 2026.
Any registrant who has not completed the online modules in full by the deadline will not be permitted to participate in the live training event, as per AAFP policy.
The live full day course includes didactic and small group hands-on workstations and concludes with group testing on various obstetrical emergency scenarios.
