Residents
Welcome! PAFP is your family medicine home in Pennsylvania.
With more than 1,000 resident members across 56 residency programs, you’ve found a true community at the PAFP. We’re here to help you thrive every step of the way during your residency journey.
Nearly all of the family medicine residency programs in Pennsylvania facilitate and fund their residents’ AAFP and PAFP memberships. After residency, you’ll transition from Resident Member to Active Member and begin managing and paying for your own professional membership.

Leadership Opportunities for Residents
The Resident Assembly represents the interests of residents in the PAFP. We invite all resident members to participate in the annual meeting of the Resident Assembly and run for elected office or to be a committee representative.
The Resident Assembly Chair plans and leads the Resident Assembly meetings and sits on the Resident & Student Affairs Committee.
A resident representative serves on the PAFP Board of Directors and residents serve on committees. Resident Delegate and Alternate Delegate work with the Board Rep and Assembly Chair to represent Pennsylvania at the National Congress of FM Resident Delegates at AAFP FUTURE. The PAFP supports residents’ participation in leadership positions by reimbursing travel expenses for business meetings.
If you’re interested in a leadership position with PAFP, watch your email for details about the annual Resident Assembly Virtual Meeting in the spring each year.
The Assembly elects the Board Rep from nominees. This is a position where prior service on PAFP Resident Assembly is recommended. The Board Rep represents the Resident Assembly on the PA Academy Board of Directors and Governance & Leadership Committee. Board Rep also attends AAFP FUTURE and collaborates with the Delegates in the National Congress of FM Residents business sessions.
The Chair plans and leads the Resident Assembly meetings and sits on the Resident & Student Affairs Committee. The Chair becomes familiar with resolution writing and attends AAFP FUTURE as a member of the delegation to the National Congress of FM Residents. The Chair represents the Board Rep if the Board Rep is unable to attend a meeting.
The Delegate and Alternate Delegate voice the concerns of the residents at the PAFP Annual Meeting, within the Resident & Student Affairs Committee and at AAFP FUTURE in the National Congress of FM Residents. They compose resolutions to address those concerns. They assist the Chair in planning the Assembly meeting. Delegates participate in Research Day planning as members of the Research Day Review Committee.
This committee governs all public policy activities of the PAFP. This includes analysis of pending legislation and regulations affecting family physicians and their patients. Resident representatives contribute to the meetings and share out information with their fellow resident members.
RSAC works on development of initiatives & events designed to support student interest in FM and support residents in training in Pennsylvania. Other commission functions: (1) Maintain active liaison with FMIGs in the medical schools in Pennsylvania; (2) maintain liaison with the family medicine residency programs in Pennsylvania; (3) maintain liaison with the Pennsylvania Assembly of Family Physicians Student members; (4) maintain liaison with the Pennsylvania Assembly of Medical Student members.
Provides oversight and directs development of all continuing medical education programs. The Committee meets twice a year in person and via teleconference or other means as needed. Expectations include education program planning with a focus on board review and physician personal and professional wellness, input into learner objectives, peer review of slides to absolve potential conflicts, possible review of other conference development material, teleconferencing, and attendance at meetings.
Resident Board Representative serves on this committee.
Resolution Writing
At the meeting, the Resident Assembly debates resolutions from Resident members of the PAFP. Any member can propose or submit a resolution for consideration of the Assembly or of the PAFP House of Delegates. This mirrors the resolution process that occurs at the National Conference. If passed by a majority vote of the Resident Assembly, a resolution proceeds to (1) the PAFP Board of Directors, (2) a PAFP Commission, and/or (3) the AAFP National Congress of Student Members. What’s involved in writing a resolution? Check out this great AAFP guide to learn more.
