Government Affairs: Support the PAFP PAC as 2014 Election Cycle Nears |
|
2014 marks the tenth anniversary since the establishment of the PAFP Political Action Committee (PAFP PAC). Like every major advocacy association in Pennsylvania, it is critical to be actively engaged in supporting the election and retention of pro-medicine legislators – with a special eye on candidates in leadership. Chaired by Mike Baxter, MD, a past president of PAFP, please consider making a contribution to our bipartisan PAC. All contributors receive a special gift in appreciation for their support! |

Practice Advocacy: Insurance Marketplace Signup Deadline Extended |
|
Due to continuing problems with the Marketplace's ability to send enrollee information to insurers, the Obama administration has pushed back the signup deadline to Dec. 31 for coverage on Jan. 1. The administration is asking for flexibility to ensure access to coverage options while also requesting insurers to provide coverage within one day of enrollment and to treat out-of-network providers like in-network providers. This could be a disaster: you may see patients who haven’t received their insurance cards to ensure accurate documentation, and you have to trust you’ll be compensated when you see out-of-network patients.

Quality Improvement: Stage 3 of Meaningful Use Delayed 1 Year, Stage 2 Extended |
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced it would be pushing back the start date of Stage 3 of Meaningful Use to 2017. This move was expected, and CMS is hoping to give the health care community time to properly implement patient engagement strategies. CMS is also looking to collect more data and feedback about Stage 2 before making the Stage 3 rules final. To be absolutely clear, this is not a delay of Stage 2. Stage 2 will start in 2014 for all eligible providers that have completed two years of Stage 1.
