Task Force on Child Protection Leads to New Laws |
The Jerry Sandusky child abuse case at Penn State University led to a task force whose report and recommendations were incorporated into many bills, 10 signed into law by Gov. Tom Corbett in December. Along with law-enforcement-focused bills, the package redefines the definition of child abuse, broadens persons responsible for child welfare, and enhances immunity for mandatory reporters. Implementation of the new laws are staggered, including the new definition that will take effect Dec. 31, 2014.

Three-Month Reprieve for SGR Cuts |
On Dec. 26, 2013, President Barack Obama signed into law the Pathway for SGR (Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate) Reform Act of 2013. This new law prevents a scheduled payment reduction for physicians and other practitioners who treat Medicare patients from taking effect on Jan. 1, 2014, as was scheduled, and provides for a 0.5 percent increase for services through March 31, 2014. Congress and the Obama administration are working on a solution to eliminate the SGR formula as it stands in its current methodology. Stay tuned for more information.
