SCOTUS SIDES WITH HOBBY LOBBY IN BIRTH CONTROL CASE (June 30, 2013)

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled, in a 5-to-4 decision, that closely-held companies aren't required to provide certain types of birth control to employees. CNN reports Hobby Lobby had religious objections with some of the drugs, such as the "morning after pill," which its owners believe is equivalent to abortion.
 
REPORT: DOCTORS TO TAKE PAY CUT UNDER HEALTH LAW (June 27, 2013)

A report in Forbes claims that, if a Medicare advisory panel's recommendations are followed through on, doctors will take a pay cut under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). According to the piece, the reduced payments are expected because of insurers' need to moderate costs associated with insurance exchange products. Read more here.

SOME PA. FAMILIES TO RECEIVE REBATE FROM INSURERS (June 20, 2013)

Insurers who didn't operate efficiently under Affordable Care Act (ACA) rules are about to pay for it, reports Politico - and consumers will reap the benefits. AMA CLASSIFIES OBESITY AS A DISEASE (June 18, 2013)

The American Medical Association (AMA) has classified obesity as a disease, hoping that it will make physicians and insurers take the condition more seriously and incentive better reimbursements and treatments. STUDY: TOBACCO ADS SPUR SMOKING IN TEENS (June 12, 2013)

Tobacco advertising is likely effective in getting teens to smoke cigarettes. According to U.S. News & World Report and HealthDay, researchers found every 10 tobacco ads teens see increase their risk of starting by 40 percent. The Pa. Dept. of Public Welfare (DPW) has issued a Medical Assistance (MA) Bulletin detailing the retroactive mass claim adjustment process for MA program-enrolled physicians. PAFP RELEASES STATEMENT ON GUN VIOLENCE (June 9, 2013)

As injury prevention program partners with the Pa. Dept. of Health, the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) recognizes gun violence as a significant public health problem. The PAFP urges legislators to support further research into the effects and causes of gun violence in the state of Pennsylvania, and encourages the public to become educated on gun safety and violence prevention.

FINAL RULE ISSUED ON SMALL BUSINESS PROGRAM (June 4, 2013)

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a final rule on the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), by which small employers will be able to choose their employees' coverage from a range of options. See the CMS website for more, and click here for the final rule in its entirety.
 
HHS RELEASES OUTPATIENT PROCEDURE PRICES (June 3, 2013)

Last month, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) released charges from 100 of the most common inpatient medical procedures, highlighting the vast difference between health care markets.
