Be a Leader |
The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians wants to help all of its members develop the necessary leadership skills to be an effective family physician. That's why the PAFP hosts leadership opportunities within the organization and holds leadership training sessions at CME conferences and other events.
On this webpage, you will learn about the leadership structure of the PAFP, how to become involved in leadership positions, and the times and locations of the next leadership training offering.

About PAFP Leadership
|
The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians' official leadership structure consists of an Executive Committee, a Board of Directors, and commissions and committees. Each plays an important role in the functions of the PAFP: |
- Executive Committee: The Executive Committee includes the president, president-elect, vice president, immediate past president, and executive vice president and CEO.
- Board of Directors: The Board of Directors includes one director from each PAFP region (North Central, North East, North West, South Central, South East, South West); an at-large director; a new physician director; a program directors assembly chair; and student, resident, and corporate representatives.
- Commissions and committees: PAFP leadership includes commissions and committees on the following topics: planning, nominations, practice advocacy, education, legal and government affairs, finance, member services, and resident and student affairs. Commissions and committees have groups on the PAFP Connect, where they regularly convene.
|
PAFP leaders serve in a number of different arenas:
|
- Cluster: Commissions (standing task forces), the PAFP Board of Directors and the PAFP Foundation Board of Trustees meet two weekends a year at what is commonly called "cluster." Each commission meets individually and then reports to the Board of Directors. The Public Policy Commission generally kicks off these meetings with an evening meeting on the Thursday of the spring cluster meeting and the Friday of the fall cluster meeting. It is held separately because it typically lasts longer and has more attendees than any other commission. PAFP and Foundation meetings are open to all members.
- Assemblies: PAFP assemblies include the Student Assembly, the Resident Assembly, and the Assembly of Family Practice Residency Program Directors and Family Practice Department Chairs. Each year, elections are held to appoint leaders to best represent the individual constituencies for the coming year at both state and national conferences. The assemblies also submit resolutions to be considered at the Annual Business Meeting, held in concert with spring cluster. All committees, commissions and assemblies are staffed by at least one PAFP employee to serve the needs of that particular group.
- Annual Business Meeting: The all-member Annual Business Meeting convenes once a year at a CME (continuing medical education) event.
- Town hall: Town hall meetings are held at each CME conference event to give members a chance to ask questions and make comments to board members and other physician leaders.
- PAFP Foundation: PAFP board members serve as the PAFP Foundation Board of Trustees. (For more on the PAFP Foundation, please click here.)

Ways to Get Involved in PAFP Leadership |
- Be a delegate: Any PAFP member who attends the PAFP Annual Meeting is a delegate. Delegates discuss, debate and vote on resolutions submitted by members prior to and during the Annual Meeting. No experience is required; however, delegates are expected to have knowledge of current issues, as reported in Keystone Physician, Progress Notes and at www.pafp.com. Submitted resolutions will be posted online at www.pafp.com for members to preview prior to the Annual Meeting.
- Submit a resolution: Resolutions are policy ideas that come directly from PAFP members. Any PAFP member can submit a resolution. If you’re interested in submitting a resolution to be discussed at the PAFP Annual Meeting, please click here to see some basic guidelines for resolution writing. Submit resolutions by email to bennis@pafp.com, fax to (717) 564-4235 or send to PAFP, 2704 Commerce Drive Suite A, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Resolutions may also be submitted during the Annual Meeting and will be considered only if agreed upon by a majority of delegates. If passed, a resolution becomes official policy and directs PAFP actions.
- Serve on a committee or a commission: Members can belong to one or more of the organization's standing committees and commissions – a no-pressure, 12-month volunteer opportunity. Please click here to apply for a commission or committee – you will also need to complete this conflict of interest form.
- Nominate officers and directors: Nominations must explain why the candidate would make a good officer or Board member and indicate the nominee has agreed to serve if elected. If you would like to be nominated or make a nomination, please email PAFP Executive Vice President and CEO Brent Ennis, at bennis@pafp.com. Nominations also may be made during the Annual Meeting.
