Philly officials greenlight safe injection sites Jan. 24, 2018
Philadelphia is poised to become the first city in the United States to establish safe injection sites. Philly.com reports these sites will be medically supervised facilities where people can inject drugs like heroin, be revived if they overdose, then be helped into treatment. The city itself will not operate the sites. |

While Americans with employer-based insurance are using less or the same amount of health care they have over the past five years, they are spending more thanks to rising prices. Pa. hospitals must notify patients of charity care status Jan. 22, 2018
Pennsylvania has changed the definition of "charity care" so that hospitals are now required to notify patients of their charity care eligibility, even if it was determined without the hospital's cooperation. A ruling has found the Pennsylvania Dept. of Health (DOH) must reveal more information - such as financial backers and operators - about medical marijuana dispensary and grower applicants. TribLive reports the department originally allowed applicants to redact information that they wanted to remain confidential. |

Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf has signed an order for a 90-day disaster declaration over the state's opioid epidemic.The York Dispatch reports 4,600 Pennsylvanians died of opioid overdoses in 2016. In a media release, PAFP President Ed Zurad, MD said Pennsylvania physicians are up to the task of combating this deadly crisis. |

Pennsylvania has given the green light to the state's first medical marijuana dispensary. The Associated Press reports the Keystone Canna Remedies dispensary in Bethlehem has received authorization to begin providing the drug to approved patients; officials say the first remedies are expected within four months. |
