We’ve all seen the images on the news and heard stories about the devastation in Houston and the surrounding areas following Hurricane Harvey. At least 10 people have been killed; tens of thousands spent the weekend in shelters, and with more rain expected, the situation may become more dire.
Several PAFP members have asked how they can help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Please see below a list of reputable aid and relief organizations working on the ground to get aid to residents quickly and safely.
National:
American Red Cross – This well-known aid organization is accepting donations in any amount, either through its website, or via mobile: simply text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10.
United Way of Greater Houston – Funds from this flood relief project will be used to help with immediate needs and long-term services; donate via their website or by texting UWFLOOD to 41444.
Local:
Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has established this fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods.
Houston Food Bank – Many throughout Houston and the surrounding areas have no access to food; this food bank is accepting donations for immediate emergency food relief.
Portlight – This relief organization is providing assistance to people with disabilities affected by Hurricane Harvey and has already offered emergency assistance to hundreds of people.
Thank you for considering a donation to these organizations. Please note that the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians has no vested interest in or official connection with any of these groups.
Additionally, please be aware that scammers often use disasters as an opportunity to take advantage of those willing to provide aid. The organizations above have been recommended locally and nationally, but other services posing as relief agencies have less honorable goals. Do your research before you donate any money to Hurricane Harvey relief.
