Many physicians unhappy with costs of care Nov. 30, 2017
Nearly one in three physicians is dissatisfied with what their patients paid for their services over the last year. Deseret News reports that's compared to 13 percent of Americans surveyed in a national poll by University of Utah Health. Most - 83 percent of patients and 89 percent of doctors - say overall costs are too high. |

As Pennsylvania's medical marijuana program continues to roll out, doctors and growers are figuring out how to educate patients. Philly.com reports there's no advertising budget, and doctors who recommend the treatment can't publicize it. So far, 107 Pennsylvania physicians have been approved under the program. |

Under a new definition of hypertension, millions more Americans will have high blood pressure. ABC News reports the American Heart Association (AHA) has determined that a reading of 130/80 qualifies as hypertension, moved from 140/90. This means 46 percent of U.S. adults now live with high blood pressure. |

In its first week of operation, more than 3,800 Pennsylvanians have signed up for the state's new medical marijuana program. According to the Associated Press, Gov. Tom Wolf says more than 200 health care professionals have signed up as well. Patients must suffer from an illness on a list of 17 qualified conditions. |

Non-opioid painkillers just as effective: study Nov. 8, 2017
For some types of pain, basic painkillers work just as well as opioids. Time reports a new study published in JAMA did not find much difference between pain patients who were given opioids for pain versus a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Studies show even short-term opioid use can lead to addiction. |

The supply of physicians in the U.S. has increased in recent years, and Pennsylvania boasts a healthy physician population. Becker's Hospital Review reports recent data shows the Keystone State has a robust 311.8 physicians per 100,000 patients, good for 8th place. The state has 39,863 physicians in total. |

As medical malpractice claims decline, the average medical malpractice payment has risen by about 25 percent, adjusted for inflation, since the 1990s. According to Forbes, about one in 14 claims pay out over a million dollars; however, since then, the rate of paid claims has decreased by more than 50 percent. |

Medscape reports a survey of nearly 7,000 doctors found 26.6 percent planned to leave practice within two years. |

Dozens of Pa. docs approved for medical marijuana Nov. 2, 2017
More than 100 physicians across Pennsylvania are now approved to certify patients for medical marijuana. According to WNEP, Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine says patients will have access to the treatment within six months.
